Take healthy steps now to control high cholesterol and lower cholesterol; this can be accomplished without risk with essential oils. People with high cholesterol have twice the risk for heart disease according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. What’s worse, most folks aren’t even aware that they have atherosclerosis until they have a heart attack or stroke. Lowering your cholesterol and triglycerides with essential oils may slow, reduce, or even stop the buildup of dangerous plaque in your arteries causing blockage of blood flow which could result in a heart attack or stroke.
Atherosclerosis, where plaque deposits build up in the innermost layer of arteries, leads to reduced blood flow and serious cadiovascular disease. Atherosclerosis is initiated by an increase in oxidized low density lipoproteins (LDL) in cholesterol, and this can be reduced by administration of anti-oxidants. However, statins are more often used lower LDL cholesterol but, although there has been some success, some individuals do not tolerate statins and they are not always effective. There have been efforts to develop more effective and better tolerate plant-derived drugs, and so Vallianou et Al. (2011) investigated the potential of Chios mastic gum (Pistacia Lentiscus var. chia) and camphene as alternative lipid-lowering agents, finding that both had a strong hypolidemic action, and that the mechanism of action was different from that of statins.
Lower Cholesterol With Essential Oil
Essential oils could have a role to play in provention of atherosclerosis due to their anti-oxidant activity against LDL. Edris (2007) cites studies which highlight several essential oil constituents that have therapeutic potential in this respect – but as dietary supplements, not in the context of aromatherapy. These are terpinolene, y-terpinene, eugenol, and thymol. Other essential oils and constituents have been shown to lower plasma cholesterol and triglyceride levels, notably black cumin (Nigella sativa) and its main constituent, thymoquinone.
However, it has also been demonstrated that inhalation of lavender and monarda (species not indentified) essential oils (0.1-0.2mg/m^3 of air) can reduce the cholesterol content in the aorta and atherocherotic plaques, but without affecting blood cholesterol (Nikolaevskii et al. 1990, cited by Shaaban, El-ghorab and Shibamato 2012). Given that essential oils are inhaled and absorbed during aromatherapy treatment, it is therefore not unreasonable to suggest that they might have a preventative role in atherosclerosis. Other than lavender and monarda, essential oils that are characterised by identified LDL anti-oxidants include tea tree (terpinolene, y-terpinene), Pinus mugo (tepinolene), thyme species (thymol), clove (eugenol), narcissus absolute, mandarin petitgrain, and the citrus peel oils yuzu, mandarin, bergamot, lemon and lime (y-terpinene).
