How To Make Hand Lotion with Essential Oils

The Secret to Natural Hand Lotion

Making your very own homemade hand lotion with essential oils begins by blending essential oils in an unscented, natural lotion or cream base. Adding essential oils allows you to benefit from the best hand lotion that contains the therapeutic qualities of the essential oil, giving you a non-oily way to apply essential oils. This is especially useful for someone with a skin condition that does not do well with oils. The dilution rate for using essential oils in a lotion base is no more than 2%. For adults, use 20 drops of essential oil to four ounces of lotion. For children and the elderly, use 10 drops of essential oil to four ounces of lotion.

Using lotion as a carrier is one of the best hand lotions to make and my favorite since it is lighter than a carrier oil for hand lotion. You may want to make your own hand lotion or buy a pre-made lotion and just add essential oils to it…Are you adventurous enough to try making your own?

Since hand lotions are water-soluble, the skin easily absorbs them while they can be spread over a large area of the body and hold the essential oil on the skin longer. Depending on if you add butter to it (like Shea Butter or Cocoa Butter), then this will make it heavier on the skin. A hand lotion can be used for an acute injury where you want the oil to absorb fast, or you may want to create a jojoba blend for massage or a butter blend for a chronic arthritis situation or a skin issue. You decide!

Deciding which carrier? Take out all of your oils and decide what the purpose of your hand lotion is. Are you looking for oils that are skin-nourishing or for a specific health condition such as arthritis or dry skin? Decide on 3–5 oils you want in your blend. If you need help in deciding, look up skin conditions in the therapeutic index section of Therapeutic Blending With Essential Oil for suggestions/ideas.

What You Will Need to Make Hand Lotion with Essential Oils

  • Carrier - 2 oz (60 ml) lotion or almond oil
  • Essential Oils
  • Bottles/Containers One 2 oz (60 ml) lotion jar or bottle

Directions

Step 1: Gather all of your oils. Take out your datasheets for your essential oils and read about each oil’s particular application and uses.

Step 2: Set an intention or specific purpose for this blend. For example, “I want to make the best hand lotion for an anti-inflammatory blend or an antiseptic lotion for injury.”

Step 3: Choose three oils that would be good for your blend to make the best hand lotion for you. If you find more than three oils that would make nice candidates for your blend, narrow it down by reading more about these oils on their datasheets. Perhaps there are other qualities of these oils that make sense for supporting your overall health. You may find other conditions that can be addressed with your blend as well. It may match other qualities depending on who the lotion is made for, both physically and emotionally.

Step 4: Decide on your dilution. This will be based on the age and constitution of the person you’re blending for. Is this a chronic health condition or an acute condition? This will be covered in greater detail in the Therapeutic Blending With Essential Oil book. Once you have determined your dilution percentage, you know how many drops of essential oils to use in 2 oz (60 ml) of lotion. If for example, you are making a first-aid antiseptic hand cream for your 16-year old son who is an avid hiker, you might choose to make a stronger blend at about 5-10% dilution for short-term use (two or three days).

Dilution Rate:

You will need to consider the dilution rate based on the age and overall health of the person you’re making homemade hand lotion with essential oils for, the specific health concern you’re blending for, the specific oils you’re using, and the application for its use (a hand lotion, steam, a spray, etc).

Over time you will develop a more intuitive talent for choosing both the oils and the dilution. These are just guidelines, but you need to experiment with oils to get comfortable in using them and knowing how much. If you respect the basic dilution guidelines and the safety concerns of the oils, you will do fine!
